ROW OF LIFE | Cherish the Journey

Row of Life follows renowned ocean rower, Marine Corps veteran, three-time Paralympian, and fourteen Guinness World Record holder Angela Madsen. In 2020, Angela attempted to row solo and unassisted across the Pacific Ocean, from Los Angeles to Hawaii. What unfolds is a harrowing story of her determination, resilience, and immense courage to pursue the unknown, and the unyielding support of Angela’s wife, Deb, who, separated by a vast ocean, champions Angela’s dream despite the cost.

Withitgirl Chloe Carrere attended the premiere of Row of Life at Santa Barbara International Film Festival 2025 and later sat down with the director, Soraya Simi.

Here is Chloe’s glowing review:

What this documentary achieves is, in my opinion, the mission of storytelling; you walk away truly impacted. To help you understand the scope of Angela Madsen’s impact and the power of this film, not only did it end with a several minute standing ovation, but several audience members, including the founder of a nonprofit that worked with Madsen, took the time during the Q&A to tearfully talk about what an incredible life Madsen led and her lasting legacy on the individuals and her community.

Over coffee, Soraya Simi tells me about her journey to get this film made. While the film captures her own grief at Madsen’s loss, what goes on behind the scenes is 6 years of complete dedication to sharing Madsen’s story to future generations that keeps Simi advocating for finishing this film despite many challenges and obstacles along the way. The world premiere at SBIFF feels like an appropriate homecoming for Angela and Soraya both; they are California transplants that fell in love with this place enough to call it home. At the heart of this film is the central message: follow your dreams, appreciate the details of life, and focus on the positive. Madsen’s dry humor and inspiring story conveys this message in a way that truly makes you rethink your approach to life, and maybe want to take up ocean rowing?

Row of Life is more than a documentary—it’s a testament to the power of resilience, love, and unwavering determination. Through the lens of director Soraya Simi, Angela Madsen’s extraordinary journey unfolds with raw emotion, celebrating her courage while honoring the immense sacrifice behind her dream. The film’s impact was undeniable, earning a standing ovation and heartfelt tributes from those inspired by Madsen’s legacy. As Withitgirl Chloe Carrere reflects, this story doesn’t just stay on the screen—it lingers in your mind, urging you to embrace life’s challenges with boldness and an open heart. Whether or not you ever pick up an oar, Row of Life reminds us all to chase the impossible and cherish the journey along the way.
